From Iron Curtain to National Identity and European Heritage

This workshop aims at introducing current debates concerning the legacy of the Iron Curtain in the context of major political transformations after 1989. Focus will be the built environment that emerged in the context of the global political tensions generated between the 1960s to the 1990s. It will also question the motivation for the preservation of ideologically charged architecture from both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The workshop is organized in form of a round table discussion and invites participants to critically address the role of ideology in authoritarian and democratic regimes and its impact on architecture and heritage preservation. Furthermore the increasing conflict between national and European identity and its instrumentalization will be highlighted.

In cooperation with:

Kirsten Angermann, Dora Ivanova (ICOMOS DE, AG 2020), Laura Demeter (Leibniz Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropaforschung, Regensburg)

Multifaceted Heritage and reinterpretation of places

This workshop focuses on the complexity of communicating multifaceted heritage in the digital age and the influence of sociological and political changes on the narratives at cultural heritage sites. Presenting cultural heritage in a museums context, means giving meaning to exhibits in a way that visitors can understand and image the uniqueness of the place, the history and the exhibit itself. In other words, stories must be told, and narratives must be presented.

To present narratives means also to manage narratives as any place or exhibit tells different stories.
The workshop invites participants to discuss and explore interactively how interpretation as well as misinterpretation of cultural heritage are influenced by the specific narrative provided.

In cooperation with:

ERASMUS+ project E-CUL-TOURS (Werner Gronau/Hochschule Stralsund, Luca Driussi/EUFRAK-EuroConsults).
