The European Year of Cultural Heritage in Germany was solemnly opened in Hamburg’s town hall with more than 500 guests on 8th January with European folk music, ringing bells and motivational speeches. Minister of State for Culture and Media, Prof. Monika Grütters, DNK President Martina Münch, Hamburg’s Senator for Culture and Media Carsten Brosda and Petra Kammerevert, chairmen of the Committee on Culture and Education in the European Parliament, together initiated the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 in Germany in the Great Hall of the Hamburg City Hall under the motto “SHARING HERITAGE”.

The Sharing Heritage Love Tree Ensemble, which was founded specifically for the cultural heritage year, premiered and a virtual reality resurrection of British engineer William Lindley accompanied the keynote speakers. The bell of the first ship, which was included in the Hamburg monument list, the Schaarhörn, served as an instrument.
