The "Day of Libraries" has been held annually October 24 since 1995. It was created by the then Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker. The date refers to the first public library founded on 24 October 1828 by Karl Benjamin Preusker in Großenhain. Every year the day draws attention to the 10,000 libraries in Germany and their extensive offers. With the most diverse events and various services during the day the libraries point out their importance of being indispensable as cultural and educational institutions.
The German Library Association assigns the only national library award in Germany "Library of the Year" during the 'Day of Libraries' each year.
