Getting young people interested in protecting their cultural heritage and helping them develop a sense of responsibility for the built environment are the aims of “denkmal aktiv – Kulturerbe macht Schule”. The school programme of the German Foundation for Monument Protection (Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz) is run under the aegis of the German UNESCO Commission for 15 years now and has created a nationwide network of schools where the issue of protecting cultural monuments is part of school life.
For the current school terms, "denkmal aktiv" called for projects dedicated to the issues of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. About a dozen schools picked up on this suggestion and get their students involved in our shared cultural heritage.
For the duration of one school year, participants now study their local cultural heritage, explore it for connecting links and plunge into the richly diverse forms of cultural expression that developed on our continent.
