Wiki Loves Monuments is a photo contest with a specific focus on subjects of (cultural) monuments which is organized by active volunteers of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. By now, more than 10’000 people from 40 countries participate in Wiki Loves Monuments every year. Since 2012, Wiki Loves Monuments is recognized as the largest photo contest in the world, as established by the Guinness Book of World Records. In Germany alone, more than 20’000 new pictures are being uploaded every year in the context of WLM which significantly contributes to raised awareness for subjects of monuments protection and preservation. All submitted pictures are uploaded under a free license on Wikimedia Commons, our platform for freely usable media files, which secures a sustainable use of the material for the general public. The pictures can be used, shared, and edited freely all over Europe and beyond the borders of Europe as well. WLM, the related articles, and Wikipedia with its great outreach in general therefore contribute greatly to the cultural diversity in Europe and worldwide. Anyone can participate in the contest, contribute to the project, or simply use Wikipedia and its articles to experience European Cultural Heritage in a special way.
In the context of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) 2018, Wikimedia Deutschland, in strong cooperation with active volunteers, wants to develop further the traditional Wiki Loves Monuments Contest and widen its reach. With the creation of an (additional) international EYCH Special Picture Contest, we want to draw the attention to the significance European Cultural Heritage has for each and everyone—among both, the volunteers of the Wikimedia projects and the broader audience. With the increased support for photography of 360 degree panoramas, volunteers will have the opportunity to create new and innovative perspectives on monuments. We will concentrate our activities on enabling and inspiring young people as well as volunteers who have not realized yet any projects in cooperation with GLAM institutions (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums). The general public and the communities of the Wikimedia projects will be updated of the progress of WLM goes EYCH as well as encouraged to actively participate through Wikipedia banners and by using a multimedia communication strategy. All activities are created as to involve the Wikimedia movement in the issues of monuments and monument protection in the long term.
The project is supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, BKM) in the context of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
