A Place at the Royal Table / Zu Tisch! Genießen in Schlössern und Gärten
From the magnificent settings of grand dining rooms to the simple earthenware bowls, pots and pans of the kitchens, fine wines in the cellars, lemons and Seville oranges on plates – The food and drink in castles, gardens, and monasteries throughout Europe hardly differed from each other, whether they be in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, BadenWuerttemberg, Sweden, or Spain. Notwithstanding Europe’s diverse cultural heritage, these familiar dining experiences are an expression of Europe’s common roots, and historically grown network.
To bring this fascinating heritage closer to the broader public, especially young people and families, and, as a contribution to the European Heritage Year SHARING HERITAGE 2018, the association "Castles and Gardens in Germany e.V.” launched the campaign ‘Zum Tisch! Genießen in Schlössern und Gärten’. Over sixty castles, monasteries, and gardens from all over Germany are taking part in it, making their original historical locations available to the public. Localities such as kitchens, dining and banquet halls, orangeries, kitchen gardens, storage cellars, wine cellars, ice cellars, refectories or agricultural buildings, will all be part of the experience. Among explaining the history of ice cream, five o'clock tea and coffee, table decorations and chamber music, other events are brought to the public, such as exhibitions, guided tours, festive dinners and soirees, as well as how the Cistercians managed their ponds, and the hunting practices of royalty. The events will take place throughout 2018 and will culminate in an international picnic in June. At the same time, the "Network of European Royal Residences" welcomes the European Year of Cultural Heritage with the project "A Place at the Royal Table"; highlight of the theme year will be an international picnic "Royal Table Day" on 23 June 2018.
"Zu Tisch! Genießen in Schlössern und Gärten" is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) in conjunction with the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018.
